The We to Me club at Woodland Park would like to provide you with the opportunity to support this year’s global initiative. For the past three years Woodland Park has supported Daystar School in Jinja, Uganda. This school services the families who live in Masese, a slum community 400 metres from the school’s doorstep. The children who attend Daystar are among some of the neediest children in Africa. Life in Masese is hard. Extreme poverty, horrid sanitation, unemployment, abuse, alcoholism, and rampant crime permeate the community.

It is the goal of the Me to We club that this year Woodland Park could sponsor 15 students to attend school for a year who otherwise would not. (The school year in Uganda runs from mid-February to December). Our plan is to raise money through a Valentine’s Bake Sale held on Thursday Feb. 11, 2016. As a family you can participate in the following ways: bake one or more dozen nut-free Valentine’s treats (cookies, muffins, squares, cupcakes etc.), purchase one or more dozen treats for $10 per dozen, or double your support by both baking and buying!

All nut-free baking will be received on the morning of Feb. 11th anytime between 8:20 and 8:40 am in the front hallway of the school. Baked goods by the dozen can be pre-ordered and paid for on School-Day by Sunday, February 7th. Any families wanting to purchase less than a dozen cookies can send money with their child on Feb 11th. Individual items will cost $1.00 each. Throughout the day on Feb. 11th students who have pre-ordered will come to the bake sale, choose their dozen cookies and take them home on a small tray. Those students that bring cash to the bake sale will be given a turn once the pre-orders have been filled. (Please inform your child if they are able to eat any of these treats at school or if they are to all come home). It is our hope that most sales are done by pre-order to ensure we have sufficient quantity.

If each class at Woodland could pledge to bake 15 dozen cookies and each class could purchase 15 dozen cookies we would raise the funds needed to support 15 students. The money raised would provide each student with school supplies and a uniform. It would cover the cost of their daily lunch meal and pay tuition costs for each student for one year. (Free public education does not exist in Uganda. All schools charge tuition).

To purchase and/or indicate if you are able to donate some baked goods, please log into School-Day and look under the Products tab.  If you are not registered on School-Day and would like to pre-order and/or bake, please send in a note and the required amount of money with your child by Friday, February 5th.

Thank-you for giving the gift of education to these children.
